22 October 2025 : Paracas
22 October 2025 : Paracas
Paracas is a coastal desert town most notable for the nearby Ballestas Islands.
Ballestas Islands
The first and main event of the day was a boat trip to see the Islands.
The boat passed the Paracas Candelabra, a prehistoric geoglyph (from around 200 BC) similar to the Nazca Lines. Located alongside the coastline of the Paracas peninsula and around 560 feet tall it is visible from several miles out to sea causing some to speculate that it may have been an aid to navigation - but really, like the Nazca Lines, nobody knows.
The Ballestas Islands themselves consist of a number of rock formations.
The islands are a sanctuary for wildlife, in particular humboldt penguins. It was surreal to move so quickly from the desert to seeing penguins...
...and more broadly these rocky islands that were teaming with life including many other bird species...
.. as well as fur seals and sea lions.
Paracas Town
Back on the mainland, Paracas is a lovely seaside town. It's a very relaxing place to stay.
Golden Shadows Trek
In the afternoon I joined a 'Golden Shadows' trek along the desert coast.
