8 October 2025 : Lake Humantay
Another day trip, this time to Lake Humantay. This is actually a stop on the Salkantay ("Savage Mountain") trek - an alternative to the classic Inca Trail. Collection from my hotel was at 4:00 am. A 2 hour coach journey took me and other tourists to Soraypampa where we had breakfast.
Then we set off on the walk. Donkeys were also available for those who preferred to travel that way but I proceeded on foot.
The walk lasted about two and a half hours and was fairly tough but not so much as parts of the Inca Trail or of Huayna Picchu.
Humantay is a glacial lake at about 4,200 metres above sea level - roughly the same as the highest point on the Incan Trail at Dead Woman's Pass. The waters are considered sacred so entering the lake is not allowed - also I suspect it would be pretty cold.
Then the return walk, breakfast and coach back to Cusco by the early evening.
Later in Cusco I came across a gathering / parade.
