9 October 2025 : The Sun Route to Puno
Now it was time to move on from Cusco. I took the 'Sun Route to Puno' with tourist stops along the way. The coach depated at 6:00 am so another early start to check out and get to the station on time.
Andahuaylillas - Church of Saint Peter the Apostle
The first stop was the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle. nicknamed (at least for tourism purposes) "the Sistine Chapel of the Americas". This is a 16th century church built by Jesuit missionaries on what had been the site of an Incan temple.
The interior is impressive and ranges from ornate to gaudy. Photography is restricted so I don't have a close picture of the altar area. We were told that the amount of gold was to appeal to the Quechua who were used to it in the Incan temples.
The town is small and peaceful but we were gifted the sight of a surprising number of police complete with riot shields. Apparently the president was to be visiting the area.
Parque Arqueologico De Raqchi
Next stop was at the archeoloical site at Raqch'i. This is the location of the Temple of Wiracocha (a pre-Incan supreme deity). The temple was largely destroyed by the Spanish but there are parts still standing.
La Raya Pass
We stopped at Abra La Raya, the highest point on today's itinerary at over 4,300 metres above sea level, giving views of the mountains and countryside.
Pucará
At Pucará there is an impressive looking church
And a small museum of local archeological finds
Puno
I arrived in Puno and checked into my hotel - the Camino Real Puno. This is located a bit away from the lake (although well within walking distance) but the room is very comfortable.
