16 October 2025 : Arequipa
I spent my second day in Arequipa exploring more of the city.
Inglesia de San Augustin
The Inglesia de San Augustin is a 16th century church with an intricate baroque exterior.
The Monastery of Santa Catalina
The highlight of the day was exploring the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena. This is a citadel monastery with its own streets and homes, gardens and squares and places of worship.
One of the streets
A room in one of the homes
A kitchen
A communal washing area
And a communal laudry area
One of the treasures in the monastery museum
In places the walls are adorned with colourful frescoes.
Demonstration
With all the police presence I saw one 'protest' in Arequipa but it seemed peaceful enough. With a handful of Police with riot shields behind them, these people seemed to be campaigning on behalf of their hospital staff as heroes of the pandemic.
Juanita
I also visited the Museo Santuarios Andinos (Andean Sanctuaries Museum),the home of Juanita, the ice maiden of Ampato.
Juanita is the name give to the mummified remains of a sacrificed adolescent Inca girl. The body was found on Mount Ampato, extremely well preserved due to the cold at the high altitude.
Only guided tours are allowed here and there is a strict "no photography" rule (which seems especially unreasonable give that the main exhibit on the tour is a replica of Juanita and not her actual mummified body) so the only picture I got was of the entrance.
Information about Juanita, the expedition that found her ad the objects found with her was well presented and interesting.
Markets
In the afternoon looked around the markets including the Mercado San Camilo
And the Fundo el Fierro artisanal market
