14 October 2025 : Colca Canyon
14 October 2025 : Colca Canyon
Another 6 am start with a coach trip starting from the hotel. This was now a bigger group on the tour as people joined who had travelled from Arequipa.
The Colca Valley
The countryside in this area (called the Colca Valley where it is wider, becoming the Colca Canyon when it narrows) is magnificent.
Yaque
On the way we stopped at the village of Yanque which boasts an impressive 18th century Church of the Immaculate Conception.
School children perform local dances around the fountain in the Plaza de Armas town square
Mirador Cruz del Cóndor
The main stop was at the Mirador Cruz del Cóndor in hopes of seeing the iconic Andean condors.
But first a man in a condor costume.
Although he was arguably a poor alternative to my own condor impression.
Viewing points and platforms provided panoramic views over the canyon and the skies above.
I was lucky to get a few sightings of actual condors. See if you can spot them in each of the photos below.
I also got a couple of closer shots.
Then it was back on the road with stops to admire the countryside (I think this view was at the Mirador de Antahuilque Alto)
Arequipa.
Ultimately bringing me to the city of Arequipa.
My hotel in Arequipa was the Posada Nueva España.
